Enid J. Roscoe, 80, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
Enid Joy Roth was born to Victor M. and Martha (Meintzer) Roth in Dubuque, Iowa, on August 15, 1929. Victor was born in Hebron, North Dakota to Henry and Caroline Roth. Victor attained far more education than the average young man of the early 1900s. He attended the University of North Dakota and received a BA degree in electrical engineering on June 9, 1925. In June of that year he married Martha Meintzer of Elgin, North Dakota. She held a secretarial position in the university. Victor and Martha had one child, Enid. When she was two, the family moved to Independence, Iowa, where Victor worked for Interstate Power Company.
After graduating from Independence High School, Enid entered Iowa State Teacher’s College (University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls graduating with the class of 1951. While there, she met Wallace Roscoe who also was a social studies student. Wally and Enid were married on December 23, 1950, in Worthington, Minnesota. Upon graduation, Wally began teaching at Burt High School. While there, two children were born to them. Anne Louise was born on February 19, 1952, and John Michael was born April 30, 1955. In July 1955, the family moved to Atlantic, Iowa. In January of 1964 Enid started as secretary at Schuler Junior High and retired in 1989.
Since both Enid and Wally were interested in history, they became tour guides at the Hitchcock House in Lewis and joined Questors. Wally and Enid participated in the Meals on Wheels program and were regular drivers until health problems limited Wally’s deliveries. Wally and Enid loved their dachshunds: Gretchen, Hannah, Menchen (Wally’s favorite), Hilda (Enid’s favorite), and Dooley.
