Emma Lou Carter Wright, lovingly nicknamed “Sis” was born on December 23,1923 in Bradley, Arkansas to Joseph Roots and Mattie Jefferson.  Her mother later married O.D. George when she was five years old. Her family continued to live in Arkansas, working on farms as sharecroppers.  The family eventually moved to California in 1951.  She met Blanchard Carter Sr. and they were joined together in holy matrimony on October 18, 1952.

To this union seven children were born, four boys and three girls.  On August 19, 1963, she lost her husband in death, having to raise her children by herself from ages 10 years to 20 months. She instilled in her children education was important and all of you are at least going to graduate from high school, and they did.

After her children became adults she met Noah Wright. They were married on April 10, 1982. She moved to Madera California with her husband until his passing on December 14, 1984, where she continued to reside for several years.

One of her FAVORITE past times was FISHING.  It was more than a past time, it was her love and passion.  When she saw a body of water, she would say the water looked “fishy” and she needed her pole!  On one of her fishing trips to Clearlake with Uncle Roosevelt and Aunt Sharon, she caught over 400 fish.  It wasn’t so much to eat them, which she enjoyed as much as she loved catching them.  Another time she caught an innocent fish by his tail!  She could catch 10 fish and she said that the fish weren’t biting.

Mom also could bake.  She made Bisquick cakes, homemade fluffy biscuits that would put KFC to shame, and she was known for her teacakes, that were awesome. She would make them and people would buy them from her.  And she made the best crunchy fried chicken that you could put in your mouth. She grew greens in her backyard and when someone would come by she would show them off and tell to pick a “mess” of greens to go home and cook and enjoy with some cornbread.

She expressed her love by cooking and everyone who came through her door was made to feel like family.

She would help anyone she could, and would speak to anyone she met. She easily made friends. She was an avid Sacramento Kings fan and a proud Lakers hater!

She is proceeded in death by her father, Joseph Roots, mother, Mattie George, husbands, Blanchard Carter Sr. and Noah Wright, brother, Jesse Ray George, daughter, Annette Carter, best friends Honey and Vora George, son-in law, Charles Cooper, grandsons Frederick Wright Jr. and Jeffery Carter Jr, and goddaughter, Clarice Parker.
