Ellen “Sue” (Douglas) Helms, 85, of Bloomington passed peacefully to be with her Lord, Thursday, July 9, 2020, at IU Health Hospice House.
Born August 21, 1934, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Monroe and Martha Lorene (Goble) Douglas.
After graduating from University High School, Sue worked at Sarkas Tarzian as an assembler. In 1962 she met and married the love of her life, Harvey “Junior Helms” a Greene County dairy farmer, with whom she would spend the next 52 years. She quickly acclimated to farm life and worked beside him as his partner. She, too, became a farmer, not merely the farmer’s wife.
Sue attended the Bloomfield Pentecostal Church, but was extremely proud of her life-long membership of the 11th Street Pentecostal Church.
She was a loving wife, mother, and sister who enjoyed antiques and photography. All who were blessed to know her enjoyed her gracious hospitality.
Survivors include two brothers, Charles Douglas of New Palestine and Michael Douglas (Shirley) of Bloomington; two stepsons, Wendell Helms (Debbie) of Bloomington and Lonnie Helms of Bronson, Florida; cherished friend DaNae Seymour; good friend, Doug Long; and aunt, Eva Bowers of Winchester, IN. Sue also leaves behind several grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Junior Helms (2017), and brother, George “Bud” Douglas.
