Elizabeth Spaeth died Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Parkview Home in Freeport, Illinois at the age of 92. Betty was born on December 6, 1917 in Madison, Wisconsin. She was the beloved daughter of Edna Elizabeth Frautschi and Walter Emil Schmidt. Betty graduated as Valedictorian from Marshall County High School in Lewisburg, Tennessee.

She was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, School of Nursing (always a proud Badger) and did graduate work at the University of Chicago. On March 6, 1943, Betty married Robert S. Spaeth in the Bond Chapel on the University of Chicago campus. She spent her married years as a devoted homemaker and mother.Betty and Bob moved to Freeport in 1976. She was an active member of First Presbyterian (now United Presbyterian) Church, enjoyed singing in the choir and playing the hand bells.

Her church family was very important to her. She was a member of PEO, a long-time volunteer at Freeport Hospitals, Meals on Wheels (into her 80’s) and FACC. She was a generous supporter of civic, educational, cultural and charitable organizations. In keeping with her generosity, she donated her remains to the Anatomical Gift Association of Illinois.

Betty loved to play bridge, walk the bike path, travel with friends and family, and thought Switzerland was “heaven on earth”. Her children include Trudi Spaeth Rosazza (Jack) of Iowa City, Kathi Spaeth of Rock City, Heidi Spaeth Werden (Steve) of Phoenix, John Christian Spaeth of Freeport, and grand children Kevin Werden, Lisa Werden, Calla Angle and her father Ed Angle.
