Elizabeth “Lib” Furr Whitaker, 94, of The Village at Brookwood died January 3, 2017. Born on February 25, 1922 in Stanly County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Cropsey Furr and the wife of the late Joe Whitaker for 54 years. She was preceded in death by a sister, Kathyrn Palmer of Shelby, NC.

Mrs. Whitaker was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Builder’s Class and the United Methodist Women. Lib graduated from Appalachian Teacher’s College with a degree in Education. She was an elementary school teacher for 34 years, primarily for the Burlington City Schools where she touched the lives of more than 1,000 children. She volunteered at Edgewood Place for many years. In the past, she volunteered at the Good Shepard Kitchen and helped with the food at the homeless shelter.

She is survived by two daughters, Beth Heal and husband Rick of Morehead City, and Pamela Duff and husband David of Greensboro, 4 grandchildren: Chris Heal and wife Laura of Raleigh, Julianne Bernotski and husband Joel of Morehead City, Bryan Duff of Charleston, SC, and Ellen Duff of Detroit, MI, a great grandson, Noah Heal of Raleigh, and a niece Kathy Speight of Raleigh.
