Elizabeth “Betty” (Reed) Crofts Smith, wife of the late John W. Crofts and the late Calvin S. Smith, died peacefully at home on Thursday, June 5. 2008. Born in Dalton, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Walter C. and Elizabeth Reed and had lived in Durham since 1974.
Betty graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She was the chief radiation technologist in the x-ray department at the Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital in Washington, radiation technologist at the Tumor Clinic in Yakima, and admission coordinator in the x-ray department at Tacoma General Hospital in Washington. This year, she was honored to be declared the oldest living radiological technologist in the United States.
