Elizabeth “Betty” Hunt Holding died peacefully on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 in Wilmington, NC, where she had been lovingly cared for by the nursing staffs of Champions Assisted Living, C. N. Davis Health Care Center and the Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Her private nurse, Gabriela Parham, remained at her side throughout her illness, providing unconditional care for Betty and support to her family.

Betty was the fourth child born to Emma Lee Galloway Hunt and Jesse Baker Hunt of Raleigh, NC, both of whom preceded her in death. Even throughout her youth, Betty was most known for her extraordinary ability to dance. After graduating from Broughton High School, she attended St. Mary’s College. She then moved to New York City in 1938 to attend the School of American Ballet where she was privileged to study under George Ballanchine, the famed Russian choreographer who became one of the co-founders of the New York City Ballet. After training and performing with the School’s corps de ballet, Betty began her professional dance career with Ballanchine’s Ballet Caravan followed by the beloved Rockettes of Radio City Music Hall.
