Elinor Mae (Eggert) Floe
April 26, 1927-April 19, 2022
Elinor (Ellie) was born in Los Angeles to Harry Eggert and Olinda Kidd. Ellie was raised by her father in Ventura, CA, where he owned a barber shop. Ellie attended Ventura Jr. High and Ventura High. Her high school years coincided with World War II. School buses would take Ellie and her classmates to the fields, where they harvested tomatoes, walnuts, oranges and lemons. Ellie graduated from Ventura Jr. College in 1947. Her mother passed away in July 1947 at the age of 39, one month before Ellie married Lincoln Hall. Ellie worked various jobs while Linc attended college in the Los Angeles area. In 1949 Ellie’s father passed away at the age of 47. Linc was recalled into the Navy at the onset of the Korean War. He and Ellie were stationed in New Jersey and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Once discharged, they moved to Oakland, CA, where Linc worked for the Telephone Co. In 1954 Ellie’s only child, Bradley Lincoln Hall, was born. They moved to Visalia, CA when Linc accepted a teaching position at College of the Sequoias. Their marriage ended in 1960. Ellie moved with Brad to Ventura. Ellie taught at El Rio School in Camarillo. She met a career Marine by the name of Jerry Floe. They married in 1968, and shortly thereafter Jerry was transferred to Beaufort, SC, where they lived for the next 43 years. Ellie taught at several schools there, most years at Shell Point Elementary, just up the road from their home. Ellie became a prolific quilter and was a longstanding member of Sew-Ciety and the Sea Island Quilters. She and Jerry traveled to the UK, Norway and Japan; as well as trips across the US in their motorhome. They retired in Beaufort. For many years they met their friends on Friday nights at the Parris Island Officer’s Club. She loved their many dogs (mostly Alaskan Malamutes) and they enjoyed many a sunset on their deck overlooking the saltwater marsh. Jerry passed away in 2001.
