Eldon Lee Benson, 76 years 11 months and 17 days, of Ong, NE passed away at 8:50 a.m. on September 4, 2017 at his home in Hastings, NE with family at his side.
Eldon was born in Ong, NE on September 18, 1940 to Lynn and Ethel Johnson Benson. The third of three children, he attended school in Ong, graduating in 1958. He then went to Fairbury Junior College for two years, where he attained All American status as a star player for the basketball team. He then transferred to Kearney State College where he also excelled as a basketball player and graduated with a teaching and coaching degree. He taught at Bloomington NE, Republican City and Sandy Creek. He loved his students and they knew it; many kept in touch even years after graduating.
He met the love of his life while in college and was united in marriage to Judith Kennedy on June 3rd 1962. They were married for 55 years. This union was blessed with two children, Brad and Lisa.
Eldon was offered the opportunity to return to the farm and was an excellent farmer. He prided himself with the straightest of rows, without the aid of GPS. He loved the outdoors and had a lifelong love of hunting and fishing. He also had a blue bird trail for many years with as many as 41 boxes. His goal was to fledge 2,000 birds, a goal of which he reached and surpassed. He also helped start the great tradition of barn quilts in the area and was always willing to share his expertise with anyone interested. Eldon loved his children and grandchildren deeply and unconditionally and was so very proud of each one.
Eldon was baptized and confirmed at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Ong and was a faithful member of the Christian faith his entire life.
Eldon is survived by his wife Judy, son Brad (Kris) Benson and their children Jacob, Katie and Makenzie, as well as his daughter Lisa (Craig) Reinsch and their children Nicole (Garrett) Effenbeck and Taylor Reinsch. He is also survived by his mother-in- law Stella Busch of Arapahoe and numerous relatives and friends.
Eldon was preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Ethel Benson, brother Gordon Benson, sister Rosie Niedt, and Father-in-Law Gerald Busch.
