Elaine Lombard Newland of Denver, Colorado, 90 years of age, died on August 11, 2021. She was born and raised in the Panama Canal Zone. She was the wife of William Ross Newland, mother of Guy Newland, Chris Newland, Kit Newland, Scott Newland and Jeanne Newland, grandmother of 13 and great-grandmother of seven. 

After graduating from Balboa High School, she left Panama for Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts and graduated with a degree in English Literature. She began her career as a civil servant in Washington D.C. and worked for many years as a school librarian before retiring. 

She and Ross retired in Coral Springs, Florida and later Bluffton, South Carolina. In Florida she was an active volunteer working with Haitian immigrants. In South Carolina she volunteered at a free clinic as a translator for Spanish speaking patients. She also volunteered at her grandchildren’s elementary school. She participated in public demonstrations against the 2003 invasion of Iraq.   

She is predeceased by her husband Ross, parents Alice and Eugene Lombard, and brother Richard Lombard.
