Salem – Eileen (Smith) Byland, 84, died at 2:09 p.m. Friday August 29, 2014 at the Salem Regional Medical Center. She was born December 29, 1929 in London, England, daughter of the late William and May (Hughes) Smith. Eileen was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church. She was a seamstress for many years. Eileen adored every one of her grandchildren who in turn adored her. Her husband of 56 years, Louis Elliott Byland, whom she married July 5, 1957, preceded her in death, July 16, 2013. Survivors include two sons, Elliott Byland of Cloverdale, California and Mark Byland of Salem; two daughters, Davina (Jim) Miller of Salem and Gillian (Andrew) Gonci of Salem; and seven grandchildren, Sean Brown, Jordyn Brown, Ryan Miller, Taylor, Jakeb and Madison Gonci and Kade Byland; a great granddaughter, Marley; several nieces and nephews in the United States and England and several great nieces and nephews in England. Also, special mention to her dearest friend for many years Betty Hotchkiss.
