Effie Christine McDougal Rowe Snoek, age 96, of Boerne, Texas, passed away on Nov. 26, 2019.

Effie was born on Sept. 23, 1923 in Port Arthur, Texas, to Maj. John Edward Rowe and Anna Bella Fraser Rowe.

She met her husband, Ted Snoek, in 1943 through her best friend, Ted’s sister Janette, and they were engaged less than a month later. They married in New York in 1944, while Ted—an officer in the Merchant Marines—was on shore leave. Effie later returned to Groves, Texas, near her hometown of Port Arthur, to set up a new home for the young family, and they remained in Groves for half a century.

Effie and Ted were devout Presbyterians and were heavily active in their church in Port Arthur. A lifelong learner, Effie also was careful study, could read French, and in her later years enrolled in emeritus courses at Lamar University. She was an accomplished and health-conscious cook, growing some of her own food in the garden she tended with her husband.

In their later years, Effie and Ted moved to Boerne to live nearer their large extended family, where they became members of St. Mark Presbyterian Church. A devoted couple, Effie and Ted remained together even under the loving care of nurses and staff at Kendall House Morningside Ministries until Ted’s passing in 2015. Effie spent her final days at Alamo Hospice, for whose compassionate attention and care the family is deeply grateful.

Effie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Capt. Ted Snoek, as well as her three sisters, Abigail Newman, Nancy Adelson, and Katherine Boulden, and her half-brother, Andrew Fraser.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Sandoval; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Julie Snoek; her grandchildren, Ramon Sandoval III, Katherine Sandoval and her partner Seth Soule; Joseph Sandoval and his wife Erin Rush Sandoval; Samuel Snoek-Brown and his wife Jennifer Snoek-Brown; Sara Snoek Postalwait and her husband Steven Postalwait; and Jonathan Snoek; and her great-grandchildren, Tristan Sandoval, Eli Soule, Aidan Snoek, Zoey Schmidt, Jolie Postalwait, Laney Postalwait, Wyatt Sandoval, and Fiona Sandoval.
