Edwin “Ed” Murdock Rimmer, 95, of Troutman, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 20, 2022, at his home.

Edwin was born on July 1, 1926, in Iredell County and was the son of the late Thomas Addison Rimmer and Bessie Murdock Rimmer. He was a graduate of Troutman High School and served in the U.S. Army during WW II. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Edwin returned home to work on the farm. On May 30, 1954, he married Edna Louise Galliher Rimmer, who preceded him in death on April 17, 2020.

Edwin was a dairy farmer and farmed his family land until 1973. He continued gardening until 2013 sharing much of his produce. He worked at Troutman Industries Warehouse from 1973 until they closed in 1987. He worked at Troutman Chair Company until his health required him to retire in 2014. Mr. Rimmer was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman where he served on the church council and sang in the choir. He has managed both church cemeteries: St. Michael’s and St. Martin’s for over sixty years, until his death.

Edwin was always active in the community. He was a Volunteer Fireman with the Troutman Fire Department for 23 years and served as an assistant Fire Chief. He was named Fireman of the Year in 1984 by the Iredell County Firemen’s Association. He was one of the original members of the Air Van Committee and was honored by the Iredell County Firemen’s Association for his service on April 13, 1991. He was a volunteer softball, baseball and little league umpire for many years and was honored by the Iredell County Recreation Department for his continued service to the community. Edwin was also a 4-H leader in his earlier years and a frequent blood donor for the American Red Cross. He called square dances for many years. He was also a member of American Legion Post 401 in Troutman.

Ed had a big heart. He was always ready with a helping hand: volunteering, sharing produce, jumping in his truck to go on a fire or rescue call. He had a long, full life, not always easy, yet he rarely complained.

Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Kenny Rimmer, of Troutman, two daughters, Cynthia Curry (Jeff), of Mooresville, and Alice Rimmer, of Troutman, one granddaughter, Sarah Curry, of Mooresville, and one sister, Ruth Barker, of Troutman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and Nicole Hembree and her daughter, Kylah.

In addition to his parents and his wife of almost sixty-five years, Edwin was preceded in death by his brothers, Alwyn, Halbert, and Voigt Rimmer, and sisters, Lois Eaker and Miriam Rimmer.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all the medical professionals for their care through the years: Hospice of Iredell County nurses and Rev. Steve Vance, Kindred Home Health, Doctors Hatharasinghe, Bouhussein, Rosser, Natili, Holland, Warren, and Sholar, and Kim Lafreniere, PA., and a very special thank you to Lorrie Warren, RN (his angel here on earth).
