Edward W. Eddie Howell (September 17, 1908 November 26, 2006)

Edward (Eddie) W. Howell, 98 of Cass Co. Medical Facility, Cassopolis, MI, formerly of Parkview Place in South Bend, IN, passed away on Sunday November 26. Mr. Howell was born to Garfield and Minnie Howell on September 17th, 1908 in Remington, IN. After graduating from Monon, IN high school, he came to South Bend in 1926 to work at Oliver Chilled Plow, South Bend Post Office, Studebakers and then at the Bendix Corporation for 42 years. He retired in 1973 as manager of the Engineering Services Department in the Energy Controls Engineering Division.

After retirement, Eddie worked as a Bendix Loaned Executive meeting coordinator on several United Way fundraising campaigns. He also worked at the James R. Meehan Engineering and Art Supply store. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge #235 and helped many years with Wednesday night bingo. Ed was also a 30+ year member of the Bendix Senior Management Retirees Club, where he was recognized as a one of 6 95 yr. old former employees in 2003.

In 1935 on July 15, Ed married Augusta Van Mele at Holy Cross Church in South Bend. Augie (Gustie) preceeded him in death on January 20, 2004. They met on the dance floor of the Palais Royal Dance Club in 1933 and were married for 67 years.

Their daughter, Charlotte (Howard) Poole of Magician Lake, Dowagiac, MI, survives along with four grandchildren, Michelle (Steve) Varnau of Santa Clara, CA, Brian (Jennifer) Poole of St. Joseph, MI, Gregory (Carolyn) Poole of Lafayette, IN, and Grant Poole of Manistee, MI. Grandpa Ed also had four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Rachel Varnau of Santa Clara, CA, and Nicholas and Daniel Poole of Lafayette., IN

Edward was preceded in death by one brother Arthur Howell, and two sisters, Hazel Howell, and Lillian Poffenbarger.

Eds hobbies consisted of card playing, fishing, bowling, gardening, and his favorite being the game of golf. He played his last round of golf when he was 90 years old. He was always proud of having shot a Hole in One at Studebaker Golf Course in 1932, and of the fact that he shot his age in 18 holes of golf at age 86. He was a member of the no longer existing Duffers Delight golf league of Holy Cross Church, and various Bendix Golf Leagues. Ed will also be remembered as a lifelong devoted Chicago White Sox baseball fan having finally seen them again win the World Series in 2005. Many friends and relatives probably have also been recipients of his gift for poetry. Nettie Hess, Monon High School English teacher, should be given credit for instilling in him his love for reading, reciting, and composing poetry. He and his wife enjoyed 18 winters in Bradenton, FL, where they had many fond and fun-filled memories. Eddie will always be remembered for his quick wit, his ability to remember and tell a good joke, and his kind and gentle manner.
