Edith was raised in Tiftonia, Sand Mountain, and Resaca, Ga. She had very fond memories of her time at John A. Patton School. She is the oldest girl of 11 children born to Nettie Lou and John Fox. Edith was self-supportive since she was a very young teenager when she lived in St. Elmo in a rented room from family friends, and she worked at McAllister’s Hosiery Mill in Alton Park. She married Kenneth Javin McCormick in 1940. Her first child was born one month before the start of WW2 in 1941. She and Kenneth moved, with their newborn, to San Francisco where she worked in a defense shipyard during the war while Kenneth was away fighting. Following the war, she and Kenneth returned to Chattanooga, and they were blessed with three more children.
