SALEM – Earl W. Mather, 94, of Salem, died at 8:10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013 at the Salem Community Hospital. He was born April 1, 1919 in Garfield, Ohio, a son of the late Frank S. and Florence (Irvin)Mather. Earl graduated from Goshen High School and was a self-employed carpenter. He was a member of the Damascus Friends Church, 56-year member and past zone governor of the Damascus Ruritans; a member of the North Georgetown American Legion and Salem AMVETS Post 45, a life member of the Sebring VFW, a 45-year member of the Damascus Fire Department, serving as E.M.T. for 37 years; and, a member of the U.C.T. and the Damascus Historical Society. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII with the 1256th Combat Engineer Unit. His wife, Amelia “Millie”(Ward)Mather, whom he married Jan. 11, 1939, survives him along with three sons, Robert (Barbara) Mather of Salem, Richard (Lynn)Mather of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and, Thomas (Carmel) Mather of Salem; two daughters, Bonnie (John)Woodman of Coopersville, Michigan, and Terri (Leland) McDonald of Beloit; two sisters, Edna Greenawalt of Beloit and Alma Kerr of Salem; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-great grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, his oldest son Jack, a half-brother, Raymond Mather, and a half-sister, Martha Flory, also preceded him in death.
