Earl James Whelchel Jr., 83, Anderson, passed away January 13, 2009 at his residence suddenly. He was born February 3, 1925 in Kokomo, Indiana, and resided in Anderson most of his life.

Earl served his country in the US Army from 1943-1945 during WWII. He retired from Delco Remy Division of General Motors after 37 years of service. He was a member of New Horizons United Methodist Church; 32nd degree member of the Solar Masonic Lodge #734 F. & A.M.; Solar Chapter Order of Eastern Star #604; Mural Temple Shrine; Madison County Shrine Club; Madison County Voiture #510 40 & 8; VFW Post #266; American Legion, Social Unit; and Eagles Lodge.

Earl was an avid Anderson basketball fan and was involved with the Booster’s Club. He was a season ticket holder for over 50 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Diane L. & husband Rev. Roger Crouse of Berry, Kentucky and granddaughter, Megan Crouse and Kathy Jo & husband Jackie Smith of Jacksonville, Florida; brothers, Arthur Whelchel of Kentucky and Howard A. & wife Shirley Whelchel of Kentucky; step-sons, Steve & wife Arlene Herkomer of Pendleton and King & wife Dianne Herkomer of Anderson; step-daughter, Mary & husband Richard Ulisky of Dayton, Ohio; grandson, John Hartley; great grandchildren, Adam Hartley and Erica Hartley and several other great grandchildren; nephews, Shane and Kyle and several other nieces and nephews and his dog, Wizard.

He was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Margaret M. Whelchel who passed away March 1, 1992; son, Rolland Hartley; daughter, Sue Etta Hartley; 2nd wife, Evelyn Cotton Whelchel who passed away March 17, 2007; parents, Earl James Whelchel Sr. & Helen Burton Whelchel; granddaughter, Donna Kay Downey;Great Grandchild, Tasanay J. Smith and sister, Betty Walsh.
