NEW HARTFORD –SUMMA – Duane J. Summa, Sr., (81) passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at his home in the presence of his loving wife of 57 years, Julia (Iannucci), who was his high school sweetheart. Born February 2, 1926 in Westbury, Long Island, son of the late Martin J. and Margaret (Vining) Summa. He graduated from Westbury High School and in 1943 joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre during W.W. II. Prior to moving to Connecticut, Duane was a member of the Nassau County Police Department. He later held the position of Plant Engineer for the Department of Corrections, State of Connecticut, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Duane was a talented woodworker, craftsman and artist. His love of the Old West fueled his passion for horses and country western music, from which his family affectionately nicknamed him “The Duke.” He was an avid hobbyist who enjoyed playing the guitar, horseback riding and photography among others. Duane enjoyed frequent trips with Julia to the New England coastal towns of Rockport, MA and Ogunquit, ME. In recent years, Duane and Julia wintered in Bonita Beach, FL, where he enjoyed frequenting the many flea markets. Of all his many passions, none was greater than that which he had for his family. Along with his wife he is also survived by his beloved family:daughter, Robin Roberts and her children Lisa Roberts and Jason Roberts and his wife Leanne of New Hartford; sons, Duane J. Summa Jr. and his wife Christine and their daughters, Madeline and Emily of Ft. Myers, FL; Martin Summa and his wife Josepha and their children Marty and Alessandra of Canton; Alfonse Summa and his children Anthony, Natalie, Matthew and Julia of New Hartford; and Ralph Summa and his wife Maria and their daughters Caroline and Eliza of Farmington. Duane is also survived by his brother Carmen and his wife Rae and their son of Mt. Laurel, NJ; his niece Margaret Godaire and her family of Rangeley, ME; and several other nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved great grand-daughters Francesca DeSanti and Katherine Roberts. Besides his parents, Duane was predeceased by his sister Rose Diday and his son-in-law Alfred (Skook) Roberts.
