Dr. Walter “Wally” Earl Fisher, 87, of Hartford City, went to be with the Lord at 5:00 p.m. Friday at Heritage Pointe, Warren. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rosalie; two sons, Forrest (Debbie) Fisher, Wilsonville, OR, Leonard (Beth) Fisher, Upland; and four grandchildren, Stephanie, Melody, Jacob, Abby (fiance Christopher Girgis). Wally was born in Chicago, IL the son of Walter H. and Lillian (Jenner) Fisher. He earned a Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois. Walter married Rosalie (Beale) on March 21, 1953 in Springfield, Illinois. Wally’s engineering career began at the State of Illinois Highway Bridge Office where he helped design the state’s first five span cantilever bridge in Peoria, IL, with the aid of a slide rule and calculator. He then worked with the U.S. Air Force, Albuquerque, NM, and later as a structural engineer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Cincinnati, OH and then in Champaign, IL. In Champaign, he helped develop a “shake table” to simulate the effects of earthquakes and designed defense systems for the U. S. missile silos. He finished his career at the China Lake Navy Base in California, retiring in 1990. Following his retirement he and Rosalie moved to Hartford City, in 1991 from California. During his career, he had the opportunities to travel to Greenland, Korea, and Europe and earned the highest security classification attainable by a civilian. He enjoyed being a Scoutmaster of Troop 107 and a Deacon at First Baptist Church in Champaign, IL for several years. He loved to study the Bible and read it multiple times from cover to cover. He and Rosalie loved to travel internationally and spent time in all 50 states.
