Dr. Robert John Garrity, 80, of Rensselaer, IN passed away Friday January 27, 2012 at the Jasper County Hospital.

Robert was born March 6, 1931 in Pittsburgh, PA to John & Ann (Kelly) Garrity.

Robert graduated from Central Catholic in Pittsburgh with the class of 1949. He then attended La Salle University graduating in 1953 with a B.A. His first M.A was from La Salle University in 1954. In 1957 he married Gloria Giegerich in Pittsburgh, PA who survives. His second M.A. was from Duquesne University in 1962. His PhD was from Duquesne University in 1964. He then obtained another M.A. from Purdue University in 1983.

Robert also taught while serving for two years with the U.S. Army while also teaching high school English and German in Canton, OH. From 1958-1964 Robert taught Philosophy at Duquesne University. From 1964-1972 he was the professor of Philosophy and the associate Dean at the College of Steubenville. From 1972-1984 he was the Vice President for Academic Affairs for Saint Joseph College. From 1984 until December of 2011 Robert was a Professor of Philosophy and English at Saint Joseph College.

Robert was a member of Saint Augustine Catholic Church. He is survived by: five children: Robert Jr. (Suze) Garrity-Plymouth, IN, Judith (Kevin) Kaufman-Rensselaer, IN, Kathleen (Tom) Mangel-Valparaiso, IN, Patricia (Joe) Grant-Bloomington, IN, & Michael (Missy) Garrity-Rensselaer, IN, nineteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and his sister Dorothy (Kevin) Ranaghan-South Bend, IN. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, & two sisters.
