Dr. Alistair K. Macpherson, 77, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully Monday, December 9, 2013 in his sons home in Claremore, OK. Born in Sydney, Australia, he was the son of the late Catherine (MacRae) & Donald Macpherson. He earned a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering, a M.S. in Engineering Science and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Sydney. He worked as a Project Engineer for De Havilland Aircraft and Qantas Airways. He was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the University of Toronto and an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba. In 1971, he was appointed to the Lehigh University faculty in the Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics Department. At Lehigh, he enjoyed teaching, researching and the camaraderie of his fellow professors for 41 years. The love of his life was his wife of 43 years, Margaret J., who preceded him in death. They particularly enjoyed their time spent in Oxford, England during his three sabbaticals and traveling in Europe, especially the Amalfi Coast in Italy. He found comfort and friendship in his Tuesday Bible study group. He had a lifelong passion for sailing and spent many summers sailing the waters of New England with his family. In his sixties and seventies, he sailed to the Caribbean three times with family and friends and also crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice with his son, Peter. Survivors: He will be lovingly remembered by his son David A. and his wife Karen P. of San Antonio, TX; daughter Kay L. Evans and her husband Alan R. of Olympia, WA; son Peter A. of Claremore, OK; daughter Robyn A. Smart and her husband Thomas J. of Cary, NC; sister, J. Mary Macpherson of Turramurra, Australia; and six grandsons, Andrew, Eric, Christopher, Colin, Ian and Kyle.
