On October 13, 2021, David Chapman, MD, formerly of Springfield, IL passed away in his seaside home in Jensen Beach, FL.
He faced death with a serenity and acceptance that gave inspiration to those that knew him, maintaining his irreverent sense of humor and outlook on life until the very end.
David was born on March 20, 1952, in Pittsburgh, PA to Erskine and Helen (Naisen) Chapman. He went on to graduate from the University of Colorado in 1970, and obtained his MD Degree from Southern Illinois University in 1982, specializing in Obstetrics/Gynecology.
He went on to continue practicing in Springfield, delivering thousands of babies across two generations.
Dr. Chapman served as the Chairman of the OB/GYN department at Memorial Medical Center for over 18 years as well as serving as Medical Staff President for two years. He enjoyed mentoring and teaching many students along the way.
He was passionately dedicated to his patients, which was evident in his empathetic approach to their care. Dr. Chapmen felt it was a privilege to be there for his patients at such pivotal moments in their lives.
He treated his patients with dignity, empathy, and humor; frequently exchanging stories and jokes. David always considered it a calling more than a career.
It’s difficult to put the life of a man such as David into black and white. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed sharing his passion for learning, food, music, golf, and travel. He could often be found in the kitchen, cooking and listening to his favorite music, and urging friends and family to try the new foods that delighted him.
David had a lifelong love of reading and cherished quick wit and unusual stories.
He was survived by his wife Christine Statz Chapman as well as his three children Collin Chapman, Elizabeth (Jonathan) LeRoux, Julia (Adam Rafford) Chapman, and Christine’s three children Alexandra (Kekoa) Kuamo’o, Amanda (Adam) Curl, Jessica Psihas.
David is also survived by their 6 grandchildren Isabelle and Asher LeRoux, Aria and Henry Kuamo’o, Freddy and Sam Curl. Also survived by his Siblings Janet (Ray) Lees and Richard (Kathy) Chapman and his Uncle Jack Chapman, and Aunt Nellie Bass.
