A Time To Live
Douglas was raised and educated in the parish (county) of Avoyelles, Louisiana. Upon graduation from Bunkie High School in 1970, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. After basic training, he was stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida where he met his wife Sherrell. They were married in June of 1973. Their first son, John-Douglas was born on November 30, 1981, and their second son, Chris Henry, was born on April 6, 1987.
During the course of his military career, Douglas was afforded the opportunity to travel and experience many extraordinary things. He traveled extensively as a member of the United States Air Force Basketball Team. This privilege took him to places like Italy, Spain, Greece, and Germany, just to name a few. Stations of duty included Warner Robins Air Force Base where he served in the 2955th Combat Logistics Support Squadron. Additional duty stations included Aviano Air Force Base in Aviano, Italy, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, Duke Field and Eglin Air Force Base. After retiring from the United States Air Force, he was employed by the Okaloosa County Department of Corrections for eleven years, where he served as a Correctional Officer and as a member of the SRT Team (Special Response Team).
A Time to Laugh, Rejoice, and Dance
Though Douglas was often regarded as a stern, serious, strong and heroic man, he possessed an unexpected wit and laughter that brought joy to those of us who were fortunate enough to know him. He truly believed that laughter was medicine for the soul.
He believed in celebrating life victories with a thankful victory dance. One of his favorite songs to dance to was “It Could Have Been Me” by Kirk Franklin, J. Moss, & Tye Tribbett.
A Time to Weep
The ending of a life, though we know to expect it, always seems to bring about tears and sadness. Douglas’ family and friends are experiencing this weeping and sadness. While weeping may endure for a night, the day will come when we’ll be able to again rejoice with him in heaven.
Douglas leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Sherrell, son John-Douglas Compton, wife Danette and granddaughter Carmelita. His son Chris, and grandchildren LayLani, Tatiana, Malachi, Anna, LaKele, nephews Stephen and David Knight, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Time to Die
Douglas departed this life on earth on Monday, October 18, 2021.
