Douglas Allen Zehrung died February 22, 2022, at University Heights Health & Living Community in Indianapolis, IN after a lengthy illness.

Doug was born October 29, 1946, to father Allen Earl Zehrung of Bluffton and Anderson, Indiana, and mother Esther Jeanette Mathison Zehrung of New Castle and Anderson.

Doug’s parents met at a coffee shop on Broadway Avenue, in Anderson, where Esther worked part-time as a high school senior, and Allen worked nearby as a service station manager.

Doug was the middle of three boys born to Al and Esther, after oldest brother, Dan, and before youngest brother, Don. Doug was born on the family farm in Jennings Co. with midwife neighbor, Nettie Christie, assisting in the birth.

Doug most closely resembled his maternal grandfather, Magnus Mathison, a Norwegian immigrant. Doug attended local Zenas Elementary, where he won spelling bees and a trip to Ohio for a national spelling contest. He graduated from North Vernon High School, with Latin as a favorite subject. After school, Doug worked in the family’s Shell Oil Service Station in Columbus, eagerly taking part in the muscle car era and street racing.

Doug served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam, in coastal waters on supply ships. Returning home, he joined Delco Remy in Anderson, retiring after over 30 years to Middletown, Indiana, visiting with longtime friends Larry Bailey and Larry Hammond.

Doug was preceded in death by grandparents, Magnus and Nannie Mathison, grandmother, Murley Zehrung, parents, Allen and Esther Zehrung, younger brother, Don, and Don’s son, Chad. Older brother Dan survives.

Doug was especially close with his nephew, Craig, Don’s son, and Craig’s wife, Lindsay. Craig worked tirelessly for over 20 years caring for Doug, during Doug’s health issues, and serves as his executor.

Doug was close with Teresa and Monique Dominguez, Dan’s daughter and granddaughter, nieces Debrina Zehrung Thomas and Kristy Zehrung, Don’s daughters, and Craig’s mother, Geraldine Zehrung, Craig’s sisters, Amy Southworth and Mandy Shallenberger.

Doug will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
