Dorothy Wirth, 96, of Weesaw Township, Michigan died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at Caretel Inns of Lakeland.
Mrs. Wirth was born November 10, 1911 in New Buffalo, Michigan to Eather and Clara (Brant) O’Barton. and grew up in Sawyer, Michigan. When she was a young girl, she rang the bell at the Christian United Church of Christ in Sawyer signifying the end of WWI and recently had the opportunity to ring that bell again.
In 1930 she was a member of the second graduating class of New Troy High School and continued her education at Berrien County Normal, earning her teaching certificate. She married Clarence Wirth in Buchanan, Michigan on July 29, 1933 and taught at Coveney School from 1932 until 1934. Mrs. Wirth enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, playing the organ and caring for her family.
She was an excellent cook and could easily create a meal for her family or a meal for 40 farm hands. Survivors include her children, John “Jack” and wife, Laverne Schultz of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Guy and wife, Darlene Barker of Houston, Texas and Gary and wife, Jill McConnell of St. Joseph, Michigan; 11 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Kathy Henry Wilson of Charlotte, Michigan; and her nephew, William Tucker and wife, Melissa Woods of St. Joseph.
Her husband, Clarence, preceded her in death in 1984 after 51 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Carol and her husband, David Metz; son Rick; sisters, Bernice and husband, Roy Lagerquist and Leodelle and husband, William Tucker, and her brothers, Floyd, Lyle and Gerald.
