Dorothy Shook, 82, of Three Oaks, Michigan died Saturday morning, September 1, 2012 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Michigan.
Dorothy was born July 1, 1930 in Gary, Indiana to William E and Wanda (Marsh) Braun. She graduated from Tolleston High School in Gary and on October 1, 1949 she married Thomas R. Shook. When work relocated the Shook’s to Ypsilanti, Michigan, Dorothy, an advocate of lifelong learning, continued her education at Eastern Michigan University, earning her Bachelors Degree.
In 1969, the Shooks moved to Three Oaks, where they put down roots and made their home. Together with her husband, Dorothy raised her brother William, as a son. She and Tom loved to travel, often camping along the way. Dorothy was a contributor for the Galien River Gazette, covering local stories and meetings and was known for her column “My Line, By Line”. She was interested in many things, leading her to teach Special Education, become a Realtor for Olson Realty in Harbert, and serving as a Director of the Berrien County Area Agency on Aging.
Dorothy felt a responsibility to serve her community in many ways, as a school board member for the River Valley Public Schools, a volunteer for the Harbor Country Emergency Food Pantry and Thrift Shop, a member of the Friends of the Library board of directors, and as a member of the Three Oaks United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Choir and had served on the church board.
Dorothy believed in staying current and was interested in the internet, photography, gardening, reading, watching the birds, and caring for her cats. Her greatest interest was people, she surrounded herself with positive people and was very proud of her family.Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, William and Deanna Braun of Buchanan, Michigan and nephew Nicholas Braun and his wife Sarah of Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom on January 17, 2001.
