Dorothy Pruitt, age 94, of Algona, died on Saturday December 5, 2015 at the Algona Good Samaritan Care Center. Dorothy Ann Wagner, the daughter of George and Sarah (Rowell) Wagner, was born on February 14, 1921 near Bancroft, Iowa.

She graduated from Algona High School in 1939 and Willows School of Nursing in Kansas City in 1941. While at school in Kansas City, Dorothy met Thermon Pruitt. They went on one date before Thermon entered the Army. They wrote each other over four years during the war. When Thermon returned from the war they were united in marriage at the St. Joseph Rectory in St. Joseph, Iowa on August 21, 1945. They lived in Kansas City until 1951 when they moved back to St. Joe and then to Livermore in 1956.

Dorothy worked as a nurse for Dr. Beardsley in Livermore until they moved to Colorado in 1961. Traveling to 49 states of the Americas to attend Thermon’s yearly Army reunions, highlighted their 59 years of marriage. After Thermon’s death, in 2005 Dorothy honored her husband’s wishes for her to return to Algona, Iowa.

Dorothy was a very giving person who volunteered and served all of her life. She enjoyed handiwork, plants, and loved her family. Left to cherish Dorothy’s memory is her brother, Michael (Rosanne) Schmit of Algona; two sisters, Cecelia McGuire of Algona and Donna Thilges of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Mary Majerus and Sarah Centgraf; and a brother, Thomas Wagner who was killed in Pearl Harbor. Dorothy’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Algona Good Samaritan Care Center Staff; especially Mary Hannover, Michelle Durant, Jill Adams and Kristin Pearson. The sincere and caring spiritual support shared with Dorothy by Father Ed Girres, Father Jeremy Wind, and Deacon Bill Black is truly appreciated.
