Dorothy Marie Schemmer, of Albuquerque, NM, passed away on June 6, 2019, at Presbyterian Hospital, following a short illness. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Dorothy was born on November 1, 1924, in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, to Gus and Katherine Hauser Schemmer. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Fred and Paul Schemmer.
Dorothy graduated from Elmhurst College in 1946 with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Education. She was the Director of Education for the Episcopal Church of St. Mark’s Diocese in San Antonio, Texas. Later, she served for 15 years as the manager of the Medical and Legal Bookstore on the University of New Mexico North campus. Dorothy was a voracious reader until macular degeneration took her sight. She was an avid baker as evidenced by the numerous cookbooks in her cabinets. She loved animals, especially Maine Coon cats and Great Dane Dogs. She was a loyal Oklahoma State University football fan, also a member of the UNM Lobo club and was a staunch supporter and believer in Rocky Long as the best football coach the Lobos ever had.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Evelyn Schemmer of Kingfisher, OK, nephews, Neil Schemmer and wife Kathy of Norman, OK, John Schemmer of Tulsa, OK, Keith Schemmer and wife Linda of Kingfisher, OK, and nieces, Barbara Fisher and husband Gary of Kingfisher, OK, Peggy Peck and husband Roy of Mustang, OK, and Ruth Schemmer of Nashville, TN. She also leaves many cherished great nieces and nephews and a cousin Joan Hauser Long of Aurora, CO. Dorothy’s ‘dream team’ who supported her living independently were Jennifer Bishop, Dennis Hall, Linda Dennisson, Colleen McNamara and Gilbert Libby. Providing additional support were Cris Torres her physical therapist, Debbie Miller low vision technology, Martha and Dave Lilly recycling assistance, Kelton and Dara Pinkerton pizza enablers, and Susie Henry longtime friend.
