Dorothy Maerz, 85, of LaPorte, Indiana went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday evening, May 1, 2008. Dorothy was born October 24, 1922 in Galien Township, Michigan to Christian and Paulina (Ertman) Strefling. On May 4, 1946 she married Howard C. Maerz in Sawyer, Michigan. Dorothy worked alongside her husband on their family’s farm in LaPorte.
She also enjoyed working outdoors, taking care of the lawn, gardening and taking care of her flowers. Dorothy loved being around others and visiting with them. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sawyer her entire life. Survivors include her daughter, Donna Hutchings of Decatur, Michigan; sisters, Martha Spitzer of Stevensville, Michigan; Clara Horak of Three Oaks, Michigan, and Violet Hartline of Stevensville; brothers, Ben (Elsie) Strefling of Niles, Michigan; Paul (Helen) Strefling of Galien, Michigan and Ernest (Katherine) Strefling of Lansing, Michigan; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane in 1956, son David in 1976, her husband Howard on October 30, 1979, son in law George Hutchings on December 7, 2002; her sister, Ida Kugler and brothers Reinhart Strefling, Walter Strefling and Edward Strefling.
