Dorothy Elwood, age 84, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Estherville, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2009, in Chaska, Minnesota. She was born on November 9, 1924, in Salina, Kansas, to D.A. and Bertha (Swan) Sears. Dorothy graduated from Estherville High School in 1942. She married Cecil Woods after graduation and moved to Bremerton, Washington, where she worked during WWII. After her return to Estherville, she was united in marriage to Eldie Elwood on December 28, 1951, in Jackson, Minnesota. Eldie passed away September 5, 2000, in Spirit Lake.

Dorothy worked as a telephone operator and waitress, and spent countless hours building their lake home, which accommodated her desire to be independent, outdoors and tinkering with things. Her love of the lake never diminished, where she was able to relax with the breeze off the water and spend time on her deck with loved ones. She had a great fondness for music and knew every song, from Big Band favorite Glen Miller to the quirkiness of Roger Miller to the excitement of the jitterbug, to which she danced with Eldie. In her spare time she loved watching football (the Vikes and Hawkeyes), creating ice sculptures, telling stories and playing scrabble – appropriate for a master of facts, trivia and current events.
