Doris W. Newton, age 93, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Tuesday morning, September 26, 2017 in the comfort of her family’s presence. She was born April 16, 1924 in East St. Louis, Illinois, the oldest of three children born to James and Zadie Finley. She married J. L. Newton November 8, 1941 in Jonesboro, Arkansas.
He preceded her in death in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jerry Newton; one sister, Deloris “Puggy” Swadley; and one brother, James Luther Finley. Doris loved to talk and would chat with anyone. Everybody in the neighborhood called her Grandma. Doris didn’t like being indoors.
She loved to garden and work outside. Doris was very special to everyone in the family. She loved any baby she could get her hands on. Doris will be greatly missed by family and friends.
She is survived by four daughters, Geneva Zemery of Cash, Arkansas, Brenda (Cecil) Haynes of Hoxie, Arkansas, Darlene Williams of Brighton, Tennessee, Regina (Bill) McMillen of Cassopolis; one son, Bob (Wanda) Newton of Cassopolis;sixteen grandchildren, Corey (Angie) Newton, Theresa Zemery, Tommy Zemery, Christeen (Norman) Harvey, Heather (Shawn) Sagley, Kenny Marsh, Darrell Delancy, Paula Marsh, Phillip (Charlene) Williams, Sheri (Jeff) Higginbotham, Shirley (Tony) Kleowetter, Jerry Dewayne Newton, Billy (Jaime) McMillen, Mason (Jessica) McMillen, Cindy Loza, Kaci (Jacob) Osban; forty-eight great-grandchildren; thirty great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
