Doris Hughes Cones passed away quietly on January 7, 2024 at the age of 101 years. She was the daughter of the late Philip and Mabel Hughes and the widow of Lonnie G. Cones, Jr. She was predeceased by her brother Mahlon Hughes and her sisters Joyce Witt, Janie True, Janet Lewis and Gertrude Outland.Doris grew up in Jackson, NC. She came to Suffolk in the forties to work, first at Brewer Jewelry and later at F.W. Woolworth. She retired from Woolworth in 1980. After retirement, she worked at the Planters Peanut Center and was a volunteer at Sentara Obici in the Gift Shop and Meals on Wheels. She was a member of Suffolk Christian Church, the West Memorial Class, the Chancel Choir and Saints Alive.She is survived by her daughter Elaine Abernathy and her husband Robert, her granddaughter Kelly Myles(Travis) and grandson Lee(Lauren), great grandchildren McKenna, Bobby and Lillee Myles and Grey and Gracie Abernathy; and several nieces and nephews.
