Doris E. Mitchell, 85, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:45 a.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Southfield Village in South Bend, IN, peacefully surrounded by her family.
She was born on August 23, 1932 to the late Maurice and Margaret (VanWanzeele) Matthys in Mishawaka, IN, and was a lifelong area resident. Along with her parents; she was also preceded in death by one nephew.
Doris graduated in 1950 from Woodrow Wilson High School.
She retired in 1959 from Ball Band in Mishawaka, IN, where she worked for 10 years before she had her children and became a homemaker.
On May 12, 1956, as Doris E. Matthys, she married William Mitchell in Holy Family Catholic Church in South Bend, IN. After 59 years of marriage, William passed away on May 20, 2015.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Gary) Vukovits of South Bend, IN; her son, Bryan Mitchell of Indianapolis, IN; two brothers, Ronald (Beverly) Matthys of South Bend, IN; Gerald (Jan) Matthys of South Bend, IN; several nieces & nephews; several great-nieces & great-nephews; and her loving comfort dog, Mini.
Doris was a former member of Holy Family Parish. She worked at the Holy Family Parish Festivals for many years and was a member of the church until 1984. Doris was a Past President of the Holy Family Young Ladies Sodality for two years. She was involved in PTA and was a room mother for her children’s school. She also participated in the Holy Family Choir. Doris enjoyed playing the accordion; loved listening to and dancing to Polka Music; enjoyed playing Bingo; was a connoisseur of chocolate; and enjoyed babysitting for Tyler and Kyle Miller.
The family would like to thank the Heartland Hospice Angels and caregivers, and the wonderful staff at Southfield Village for their loving care given to Doris.
