Donald Edward Young, 81, of Boca Raton, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Born on July 10, 1933 in Bridgeport, CT, he was a resident of Boca Raton for 45 years.

A star athlete in his youth, he fulfilled a dream when asked to try out as a catcher for the NY Yankees. He coached, umpired and refereed youth sports. He remained an avid sports fan and was always a loyal Yankee fan throughout his life. His loved motorcycles, convertibles and his T-Bird but gladly traded them for the family station wagon.

After he retired from AT&T in 1983, he enjoyed travel, working in his yard, building, fixing things, making things work and fit (most of the time). He was always first to lend a helping hand to those in need. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend; no one was a stranger in his eyes. He especially enjoyed working with and mentoring young people. He was the founding member of the Romeos (Retired Old Men Eating Out). His favorite day of the week was Thursday, when he and the other Romeos would gather for breakfast and fellowship.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Alice; brother, Walter; and sister, Geraldine Wermann. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Mary Ann; children Robert Donahue (Ari), Karen Stevens (Scott), and Pam; grandchildren Ryan, Sean, Megan, Shannon and Chanel (Russ); great-granddaughter Skylar; a large extended family and numerous close friends.
