He enjoyed being around his family, playing guitar, cooking, and being outdoors fishing and mushroom hunting. Butch was preceded in death by his parents and son Samuel Shafer. He is survived by his son Caleb Shafer; Rachel Zollner, whom he loved like a daughter; sisters Sarah E. Higgins, Theresa Booker, Lisa Lugabihl, her husband Warren, and Rhonda Knight; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family.
