Though days be sad and lonely, and sorrow hard to bear,
We must trust in God the Father, knowing He does care.

Relatives, neighbors, and friends were saddened when they heard the news that Donald Works had passed away at Dearborn County Hospital Sunday night May 29th at 10:49 p.m. Although he had been in failing health and suffered much with arthritis, his illness lasted little more than a week. He had entered the hospital Wednesday, May 18th for breathing trouble and weakness and was soon diagnosed with pneumonia. He had battled illness many times in and out of the hospital throughout the years, but the doctor told the family that infection had spread to his blood, and he would not recover from this. From day to day his breathing became weaker until the end came.

Donald was the 5th of nine children born to Jesse and Carrie Works that grew to adulthood. He was born on August 26th, 1928 in Allensville where he grew up. He attended a one-room schoolhouse nearby. He grew up with his eight brothers and sisters. They were Gerald, Edwin, Warren, Lois, Wilma, Dale, Betty, and Tommie.

On September 3rd, 1949 he was united in marriage to Helen Brown. They had one daughter, Deborah Works.

Donald graduated from Vevay High School in 1946. He started working at Seagram’s out of high school, but soon found a job at Brown Tool Mfg. Company in Rising Sun in 1947, which he would later own. He served as the Ohio County Republican Party chairman for 16 years & was elected mayor of Rising Sun for 12 years from 1968-1980.
