Donald Lee Sprague, age 78, of Midland, passed away on September 10, 2021 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Don was born in Bay City, Michigan to the late Roy and Anna (Sexton) Sprague. One of ten children, Don grew up learning a simple life, as well as the importance of hard work and love of family. Don raised his own family of four children in Midland. He was an exceptional father. He loved unconditionally. He taught honesty and integrity by example.
He shared his love and respect for nature with his kids, and together they had countless adventures fishing, hunting, flying airplanes and more. Don was a dedicated employee of The Dow Chemical Company for 36 years before retiring with his life partner, Joy Easter, and three grandchildren to rural Alaska. An avid outdoorsman, he spent his days hunting big game, mining gold, exploring, and living out his lifelong dream. Health challenges brought them back to Michigan in 2013. After Joy’s passing, Don moved to Greenville, Michigan to live with his daughter, Michelle Waller, and son-in-law, Michael Swan and their family. He lived out the rest of his days surrounded by his children and grandchildren, passing on his wisdom and his skills as a baker, woodworker, gardener, and tinkerer.
He is survived by his children: Michelle Waller (Michael Swan), James Sprague (Connie Bailey), Laura Rowe (Ron Bunse), Nichole Ahmed (Nasir Ahmed) and 12 grandchildren: Jacob Waller, Olivia Waller, Emma Waller, Grayson Swan, Jack Sprague, Katie Sprague, Sophie Parker, Amara Ahmed, Rayna Ahmed, Mary Klein, Marsha Pelton-Easter and Trevor Easter; brothers, Roger (Debbie) Sprague, Larry (Peggy) Sprague, Earl (Mary) Sprague; sister, Evelyn Walter. He was preceded in death by brothers, Vern, Roy and Ronald Sprague; sisters, Linda Sprague and Jean Dean. Don was a good man, known best for his kindness and generosity. He would give anything he could to anyone in need. He was loved by all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
