Donald Gerdis, age 82 of Algona, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

Donald Dewayne Gerdis, the son of Elmer and Elizabeth (Bockholdt) was born in Bancorft, Iowa on April 19, 1936. He attended Titonka Schools and graduated from High School in 1954. He played football in High School and received a football scholarship to Moringside but reinjured his knee and lost it. He worked as a carpenter. In 1959 Don married Jean Kuecker who he met at the Plantation Ballroom in Whittemore. They had three sons, David, Timothy, and Matthew. In 1960, Don co-managed Farmers Coop Oil. In 1965 he was hired as a commissioned driver for DX, which went to Sunray DX, Sunoco, and Conoco. In 1968 he purchased the company and added a propane business. In 1985 Don sold the business to the Farmers Coop Elevator. He often said the years he was in the oil business were the best years of his life. His firstborn son lives in Detroit with his partner Mike. Timothy lives in Waukee, Iowa with his wife Denise. They have two daughters, Elizabeth and Emma. Matthew lives in Algona with his wife Janet. Don was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arnold and Dick and sisters, Geraldine and Norma. He is also survived by a brother Roger and a sister Gertrude.
