Donald E. Hollister, 92, of Boise passed away February 20, 2012. He was born December 1, 1919 in Dallas, Wisconsin to Fred and Elsie Hollister.
After his birth the family moved to Westfield, NY for nine years. Don was schooled through the 6th grade when the depression began and they moved back to Wisconsin to Gramps’ farm. He started working at the age of 14 cutting pulp wood in winter and hauling it off in summer. He worked on a wheat farm in North Dakota for two seasons. He married Alice Petit in Wisconsin in 1941 and soon set off to Oregon where the big timber was. He was a rookie but he learned fast. Here’s where Don would make his mark as a Top Feller of large, old growth timber.
While working for Roseburg Lumber, he became a true legend. Don was known to have purchased the 2nd gas powered chain saw in a saw shop in Roseburg, Oregon in 1947.
Don and his family lived in many areas of Oregon on several farms and one ranch.
Don retired in 1985 and moved back to the Boise area to be closer to his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, yard work, and wood work, and could build anything. He loved to read Louis L’amour Western books and we are pretty sure he read them all, some twice.
Don worked hard and played hard and you could truly write a book on the adventures and the life of Don Hollister. We all love you and miss you very much.
Don is survived by his wife, Alice Hollister of Boise; his children, Virginia Weston (Ron) of Boise; Judy Smith (Ivan) of Boise; Ron Hollister (Cathy) of Boise; Larry Hollister (Jan) of Boise; and Lance Hollister (Sue) of Montana; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Merven Hollister; his three brothers; and two of his six sisters.
