Those left to honor Donald’s memory include his wife, Mildred “Tootie” of Newton; two sons–Don W. (Kathy) Slycord of Newton and Randy (Colette) Slycord of Redmond, WA; two daughters–Merriellen (Kenny) Meyer of Newton and Merrianne (Bob) Briese of Newton; twelve grandchildren–Randall Slycord, Kelly Smith, Brett Smith, Christopher Slycord, Michael Harrelson, Desiree Briese, Shera Morgan, Courtney Colin, Brynna Briese, Kaelie Briese, Brandi Meyer, and Nicole Meyer; eight great-grandchildren–Kristina Smith, Olivia Vander Putte, Tyler Vander Putte, Jaelyn Karr, Brayden Berger, Keaton Babcock, Gavin Babcock, and Paxton Morgan; a brother, Wayne (Shirley) Slycord of Eldon, IA; and his sister, Ruth Ann (John) Ver Ploegh of Beacon, IA.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Cornie and Ruth (Adams) Slycord; his daughter, Sherry Smith; and two brothers–Paul Slycord and Merle Slycord.

Donald served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and served on the USS Intrepid. He worked as a tool and die maker for the Maytag Company for 31 years, retiring in 1978. He was a member of the VFW and served on the VFW firing squad. He was also a member of American Legion Post 111, and the UAW Local 997.

Donald enjoyed sports, playing cards, bowling, camping, boating, and fishing.
