SUTTON – Marion E. (Whitney) Wellman, 87, and Donald A. “Flash” Wellman, 89, died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on September 8 and September 11, 2013 respectively. They were married for 65 years.

Marion, born in Grafton, and daughter of the late Daniel and Nora (McCarthy) Whitney, was a graduate of Grafton High School. Don, born in Milford, son of the late Ernest and Hazel (Houghton) Wellman, was a graduate of Upton High School.

Marion and Don had long careers with the U.S.

Marion earned a Bachelor of Braille Transcription and manually transcribed printed textbooks. She was a licensed day care provider and a US Census taker for many years. In addition, she was active in the Women’s Auxiliary and Girl Scouts.

Don was a member of the Marshall-Leland American Legion Post in Upton and for many years refereed high school basketball and coached baseball from Farm League through Babe Ruth. Don served the community as Registrar of Voters, an Associate member of the Zoning Board, and on the Mendon-Upton School Board, Board of Fire Engineers, Military Draft Board, and the Boys Club.

They leave 3 children, Deb Hebert and husband Dave of Sutton, Jane Wellman-Little and husband Paul of Bradford, ME, and Stan Wellman and wife Susan of Spokane, WA; 6 grandchildren: Leigh Gates, Wilmington, NC; Alex Hebert, South Boston; Gabrielle Booth, Windham, ME; Zoe Little, Bradford, ME; Kyl Wellman, Seattle, WA; and Marianne Wellman, Portland, OR; 3 great-grandchildren: Hannah and Nathan Gates and Nora Booth. Don leaves his sister, Dorothy Francis of Upton. Marion was sister to the late Daniel, David, Charles, and Paul Whitney, and Marjorie Sadler.

Marion and Don had a great love for their family and each other.

They died 4 days apart.

Two good, wonderful people,

two meaningful lives,

two peaceful deaths,

now together for eternity.
