Dolores Elaine Porter,89, of Palatka, died Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center after a long illness.

Dolores was born April 29, 1931, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Alfred and Ethel Krombach and graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1948. She worked as a hospital volunteer during World War II. After graduation, she went to work for the Township of Cheltenham as the secretary to the city engineer. Since she did not own a car, the city police would take turns driving her home from work. There she met her future husband, Milton, who was one of the officers. They were married in 1955 and soon after made the move to Florida. First settling in Daytona, they moved to Palatka in 1960.

Dolores stayed home raising their two young sons while Milton managed the RC Cola warehouse. With the boy’s teenagers, Dolores returned to work in 1971 as a teacher’s aide in the trainable disabilities class at James A Long Elementary School. While there she, the class teacher, and others organized and founded the Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) of Putnam County. A few years later she moved up to the front office and was the school secretary until her retirement in 1993.

Dolores had a second “career” as the family caregiver. Starting with Milton’s cancer diagnosis in 1973, she was the primary caregiver for a succession of family members until 1996 when her mother passed away.

Besides her parents, Dolores was preceded in death by her husband, Milton, a sister, Ethel, and a brother, Herb.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Milton Bryan of Palatka and Randell Lee (Gina) of East Palatka, brother, Alfred (Vicki) of Lake Como, four grandchildren, Staci Reid (Chris), John Ryan Porter, and Dedra Porter all of Jacksonville and Jayme Porter of Palm Coast, her favorite (and only) great grand-daughter, Kelsi Updegraff of Jacksonville as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
