Derek Stevens Jones, 48, of Middletown, beloved husband of Rochelle (Smith) Jones, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2015 surrounded by family and close friends at Middlesex Hospital after a short illness. He was the son of Mae Gester (Long) Jones of Pittsburgh and the late Garfield Jones, Jr. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Derek came to Connecticut to pursue his education at UCONN. He was a longtime resident of Middletown where he coached the Middletown Tigers for many years including a championship in 2008. Derek was also known for his successful career in auto sales. His last place of employment was Star Auto Sales in Meriden where he was the General Manager. All that knew him knew he was a diehard Pittsburgh Steeler fan who had a very impressive man cave full of souvenirs and memorabilia. Derek touched many lives and will be truly missed. Along with his mother and wife, Derek is survived by two sons, Derek Isaiah Jones and Elijah Henderson; a brother, Clarence Jones (Carmyn Jones) of PA; his father and mother-in-law, Jesse and Eleanor Smith of Hartford, CT and a host of close family members and friends. He was also predeceased by his brother, Garfield Jones, III.
