He was born March 11, 1972 to Bobby and Patricia Friend. He married Cassie Powell-Gossage on August 28, 1999.
Surviving are his daughter, Brianna Friend (Brennon Dean), his grandson Brentley Dean all of Knoxville, three sons: Justin Friend (Lizzy Driffill), Timothy Gossage, and Alex Gossage, his father and mother inlaw, Jim and Lynn Powell, all of Galesburg, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Prior to his illness Derek was a cook at several restaurants. Derek enjoyed family time, especially his with his grandson and time spent with his cat buddy Junior. He was an avid professional wrestling, Cardinals baseball, Oakland Raiders football, and NASCAR fan and enjoyed watching all on TV, he also enjoyed being a ham CB operator.
