Dennis Edwin Davis, 76, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes January 22, 2021 in Rio Verde, Arizona, where he and his wife, Jan, own a seasonal home.
Denny was born to Ed and Jean Davis in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1962. A natural athlete, he lettered in track, golf, basketball, swimming, and wrestling, and was named ‘All-State’ in football.
He received his degree in Elementary Education from Drake University and his Master of Science degree in Environmental Education from the University of Minnesota. Denny taught sixth grade and coached youth and high school sports in Richfield, Minnesota for over thirty years; he also coached youth sports in Apple Valley and Rosemount.
For six years, Denny served as chief negotiator for Richfield Public Schools, as well as president, vice-president, and treasurer of the Richfield Education Association. He helped initiate winter and summer field trips to Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center in northern Minnesota, including organizing fundraising efforts to provide all students with this valuable opportunity.
Denny was a member of the Apple Valley Jaycees and served on the Rosemount Elementary Site Council, Rosemount Park Board and Rosemount Hockey Association. He owned property on Maui, and was elected to the Condo Board of Directors for several terms. He was also a licensed building and remodeling contractor in Minnesota. A skilled outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating, and was an avid reader.
After retiring to Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Denny became a dedicated volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and Camp Hiawatha, and participated in the annual loon count on Wabana Lake. He also was a member of the Wabana Township Board.
Denny is survived by his wife, Jan, daughter, Kristin (Ron) Sereika, son, Erik (Jenny) Davis, grandchildren, Tierney (Neko) Graf, Delaney Sereika, Wyatt Davis and Grady Davis, a sister, Debra (Al) Rhea, brother-in-law, Keith (Vicki) Rudd and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
