Delbert Schealler, age 77, of Burt passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Kossuth Regional Health Care Center. Delbert Samuel Schealler was born on a farm south and west of Algona July 16, 1936. The family moved to Emmetsburg for two years and then to Ringsted. Delbert attended country schools through the 5th grade, attended school in Armstrong 6th grade through 10th grade and then completed 11th and 12th grade in Ringsted where he graduated in 1954. He then worked building cement grain elevators and grain bins. Delbert enlisted in the Army in 1957 and became an Army Medic and Expert Rifle Sharp Shooter. He was stationed in Germany with the 101st Airborne Division where he was a “Screaming Eagle” and also their Medic and Ambulance driver. Delbert returned home and went to Iowa Lakes College for two years and Mankato for one year. He then worked for Green Giant, Arts Way, Brougham Industries in Algona for 10 years as a supervisor and quality control inspector, Snap On and Universal until 75 years old when he retired because of ill health. Delbert believed in quality workmanship and buying American made products. He was also instrumental in fighting for the working people for safety and better working conditions. On July 3, 1960 Delbert was united in marriage to the love of his life, Janice Wentworth of Ledyard, Iowa. For 52 years the couple made their home in Burt. To this union three children were born; Darcy Theobald, Kathy Shipler and Darrin Schealler. Delbert was very proud of his wife, children and grandchildren. He was very proud of his dad’s German and his mother’s Russian Heritage and being a screaming Eagle and Medic with the 101st Airborne Division. He was a firm believer in the Lutheran Religion. Delbert enjoyed hunting, target shooting, entering contests and sweepstakes, traveling to different states which he called, “A great adventure” and said, “I want to see what’s on the other side of that hill.” During Delbert and Janice’s travels they visited nearly every state of the union and Delbert visited several foreign countries during his Army time. He had a passion for cars, was an adventurous adventurer and explorer and had strong determination. Delbert’s family always came first and he cherished them very much. Delbert fought a courageous battle with Prostate Cancer. Delbert was a tough fighter that even exceeded his Doctors expectations. He also used new drugs to combat his cancer with the thought that it may help someone in the future. Delbert loved life and was a legend in his own time and will be deeply missed. To cherish his memory is his wife Janice; children Darcy (Mike) Theobald of Good Thunder, MN, Kathy (Kent) Shipler of Algona, Darrin Schealler (Tanya) of Algona; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sister Lavonne (Jim) Mienke of Bettendorf and numerous other family members and friends. Delbert was proceeded in death by his parents, William and Nathalea (Nass) Schealler; brother Eli and sister Darleen.
