Dean Albert Hungerford was born on July 7, 1924 in Hecla, South Dakota to Albert B. Hungerford and Alma M. Heitman. He passed away on Jan. 29, 2016.
Dean lived in Hecla until the age of 6, when his family moved to Nampa, Idaho. After graduating from high school in Nampa, he served in the Navy as a Lieutenant JG during WW II from 1943 – 1946. Dean later went on to attend college, obtaining degrees from the College of Idaho and the University of California Berkley. Dean married Virginia Bell Mott of Nampa in 1951. They remained married until her death in 2004. A few years later, Dean married Doryce Coulter of Nampa. They remained married until her death in 2014.
Dean’s career in public health began in the 1950s, first working for the state of Idaho in Boise.
After returning to Idaho, Dean and Virginia also pursued a longtime dream, building a cabin on their lot near Donnelly. They later sold that cabin and built a second cabin on Lake Cascade. Dean loved building the cabins as much as he did relaxing in them with his family. The cabins were an ideal spot from which to go fishing, an activity that Dean enjoyed much of his life. He liked to stay active, pursuing other interests including golf, snow skiing, playing cards, and coaching youth baseball and basketball. Dean often said how fortunate he was to have lived such a long, full life and have two wonderful wives. Dean had a nice sense of humor and was fun to be with. He was loved and will be missed by many.
