David Earl Peterson was born on December 15, 1949, in Cass County, Iowa, the son of Ralph E. and Ruby H. (Brown) Peterson.
He grew up mostly in the Marne and Lewis areas and graduated from Griswold High School in 1968. He later attended Southwestern Community College in Creston, Iowa, earning an Associates Degree.
On May 1, 1971, he married Carol Mouw in Sioux Center, Iowa.
