David McBride, 78 of Ottawa, passed away on Thursday morning, October 10, 2019 at his home surrounded by his family. David was born on April 23, 1941 in Crete, Illinois to Harrison and Erna (Hartmann) McBride. He was a graduate of Crete Monee High School.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He married Charlene Joyce Toepfer on December 29, 1962 at Hope Lutheran Church in Park Forest, Illinois. She passed away on February 26, 2002. David was a qualitative and quantitative inspector for the Petroleum Industry for over 40 years. He was member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church serving as an elder, and a member of the choir and the properties improvement committee. He was a very active member of the Ottawa Canal Association. He completed the restoration of the canal barge on display at the historic Toll House.

His hobbies included I and M Canal History, hiking, biking, “putzing” and any adventure great or small. He is survived by two children, Catherine (Michael) Stowe, of Plainfield, IL and Douglas (Elizabeth) McBride, of Dougland, WI, three granddaughters, Brenna (Christopher) Covarrubia, Ashlynne Guiney and Delainey Guiney, one great-granddaughter, Kinsleigh Covarrubia, and three “bonus” grandchildren, Emily Stowe, Carolyn Stowe and William Stowe. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Charlene, a brother and his wife and sister and her husband.
