David Joe Bruns was born on November 16, 1942, in Hull, Iowa, the son of Louis and Sadie (Reisser) Bruns. His family lived on a farm in Lyon County, Iowa where David attended country school. Before starting the 4th grade, his family moved to Sutherland, IA. They later moved to Hartley, IA, and finally to Sheldon, IA where he graduated from high school in 1960.
David attended the University of Iowa, completing an accelerated undergraduate program and then graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Following dental school he served as an officer in the Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed first at Marine Corps Base Hawaii Kaneohe Bay and then Andrews Air Force Base, Andrews, Maryland. Following the war he opened a dental practice in Springfield, Massachusetts. After several moves, he eventually settled and retired from his dental practice in Lafayette, IN.
Dave was accomplished on the trombone, baritone and piano. He received many awards in high school for musical performance and played the piano until his passing. Dave is survived by his son Jay Bruns of Sarasota, Florida; daughters Sherry (Matt) Foster of New Orleans, LA; and Cassendra Kemmer, West Lafayette, IN. He is survived by brothers, Dennis (Susan) Bruns of Sioux Falls, SD; Dean (Cristy) Bruns of Sunnyside, NY; and sister-in-law Pam Bruns of Eldon, MO. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce Bruns, sons Jeffrey Kidd and David Cowles, sister Diane Bruns Feldkamp, and brother Don Bruns.
